Ingredients:
For the dough:
2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon granulated sugar
1 teaspoon salt
½ cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
½ cup cold water
For the filling:
Fruit filling of your choice (e.g., apple, cherry, peach) OR
Savory filling of your choice (e.g., ground beef, chicken, vegetables)
For frying:
Vegetable oil
For dusting:
Powdered sugar (for sweet pies) OR
Salt and pepper (for savory pies)
Instructions:
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, and salt.
Add the cold, cubed butter to the flour mixture. Use a pastry cutter or your fingers to cut the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Gradually add the cold water, a few tablespoons at a time, while stirring the mixture with a fork. Continue adding water until the dough comes together. Avoid overworking the dough.
Divide the dough into equal-sized portions and shape each portion into a ball. Wrap each ball in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to allow the dough to rest.
While the dough chills, prepare your desired filling. For sweet pies, combine your choice of fruit filling with any additional spices or sweeteners. For savory pies, cook and season your desired filling ingredients in a skillet until fully cooked and flavorful. Allow the filling to cool completely.
Take one chilled dough ball and roll it out on a lightly floured surface into a circle about 1/8 inch thick.
Place a spoonful of the prepared filling in the center of the rolled-out dough. Fold the dough over the filling to create a half-moon shape. Use a fork to crimp and seal the edges of the pie.
Repeat the rolling, filling, and sealing process with the remaining dough balls and filling.
Fill a deep skillet or Dutch oven with vegetable oil to a depth of about 2 inches. Heat the oil to 350°F (175°C).
Carefully lower a few pies at a time into the hot oil using a slotted spoon or spider strainer. Fry the pies until they turn golden brown and crispy on both sides, usually about 2-3 minutes per side.
Once fried, remove the pies from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
Allow the Fried Pies to cool slightly before dusting them with powdered sugar for sweet pies or salt and pepper for savory pies.
Serve the Fried Pies warm for the ultimate crispy and flavorful experience. These delightful treats are perfect for breakfast, dessert, or a snack on the go. Experiment with different fillings and enjoy the versatility of Fried Pies. Share them with family and friends, and savor the satisfying crunch and delicious fillings in every bite.
