6 cups stale bread, torn into pieces
2 cups milk
1 cup heavy cream
1 cup granulated sugar
4 large eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/2 cup raisins or other dried fruits (optional)
1/2 cup chopped nuts (optional)
2 tablespoons butter, melted
Whipped cream or vanilla ice cream for serving (optional)
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a baking dish or casserole dish.
Place the torn bread pieces in a large bowl. In a separate saucepan, heat the milk and heavy cream over medium heat until it starts to simmer. Remove from heat.
In a mixing bowl, whisk together the granulated sugar, eggs, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, and ground nutmeg until well combined.
Slowly pour the hot milk mixture into the egg mixture, whisking constantly to avoid curdling the eggs.
Pour the egg and milk mixture over the bread pieces. Gently press down the bread to ensure it absorbs the liquid. Let it sit for 15-20 minutes, allowing the bread to soak up the custard.
If desired, add the raisins or dried fruits and chopped nuts to the bread mixture. Stir to evenly distribute the ingredients.
Transfer the bread mixture to the greased baking dish. Drizzle the melted butter over the top.
Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the pudding is set.
Remove from the oven and let it cool slightly before serving. The bread pudding can be enjoyed warm or at room temperature.
Serve the bread pudding as is or with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream, if desired.
